Semantics of Enterprise Integration

Ever since I started in systems consulting 12 years ago, integration with other systems and thus organizations have been an issue that have never been straightforward to address. All the practical matters in making it all work together, with the processes on each end, the people and organizations involved in using, maintaining and supervising it, has always been a challenge. On top of that we have constantly evolving technology and products that promises to solve matters, but because of their evolution and state, also provides challenges.

3 years ago, I left a big 5 consultancy to start up an Internet portal consultancy focusing on portal development. This field has opened up an even stronger demand for complex integration both within and across enterprises. All our work includes elements of integration.

This paper shares some of my experiences in this area in the last decade, which outlines the mechanisms, and approaches that I believe are important. In particular I have focused on my last experience which demonstrates that data semantics are increasingly important, and what how to handle this across organizations or enterprises.
